18th Century painted plaster sculpture of Bacchus
Following concerns about recent cracking to the torso of the figure, we removed the sculpture from its plinth and, following investigation with a metal detector and a borescope to view inside the sculpture, found there to be a ferrous pin in the shoulder to connect the arm which had corroded and expanded and caused the plaster to crack.
The side of the sculpture was opened along the crack lines, ferrous pin replaced with a larger stainless steel item, and then the plaster pieces reinstated and repaired.
